  Souvenir Mining Spoon Granite Mine Victor Closeup.JPG - SOUVENIR MINING SPOON GRANITE MINE VICTOR COLORADO - Sterling silver spoon, 5 1/2 in. long, engraved mining scene in gold washed bowl with engraved GRANITE MINE VICTOR COLO. in bowl, ca. 1900, handle marked with floral pattern and COLUMBINE, back with sterling marking and F Co hallmarks for Fessenden & Co, Providence, RI [Partners Charles L. Tutt, Spencer Penrose and Charles M. MacNeill purchased the Gold Coin Mine in the center of Victor, Colorado in 1902 and renamed it the Granite Mine. The Woods family, founders of Victor and the previous owners, struck a rich vein of gold while excavating for the foundation of a hotel at 4th & Victor Avenue in 1894. This vein became the Gold Coin Mine, one of the richest mines in the Cripple Creek District. With this stroke of luck and fortune, the hotel was built at a new location. The Granite Gold Mining Company was organized by the partners in 1905 with the Granite Mine as one of their primary holdings including the Gold Coin shaft. By 1919, machinery in the Gold Coin shaft was dismantled as most of the ore had been extracted. Remnants of the mine, as well as the Gold Coin Club built for the mine’s workers, have been preserved and can still be seen in Victor. The old hotel burned in the big fire of 1899, when Victor’s entire business district was leveled in one August afternoon.]
